Lurss flowers
Lursslilled – the aristocrat of the shade garden by candlelight
Black cohosh ( Cimicifuga , also known as Actaea ) is one of the most dramatic perennials in the shade garden — its long, fluffy white inflorescences rise to a height of up to 2 meters in summer and fall, illuminating shady garden corners like candles in the twilight.
It blooms from July to October, when most perennials have already finished blooming — when dried, the inflorescences remain as an effective decorative structure throughout the winter. Dark-leaved varieties are especially appreciated: 'Black Negligee' and 'Brunette' with blackish-brown leaves create a dramatic contrast with the white inflorescence. For those who prefer lighter foliage , Cimicifuga ramosa and C. racemosa are suitable.
Growing location: partial shade or shade, protected from winds. Soil deep, moist and rich in humus — similar to forest floor. Not suitable for dry sand. Slow grower — only needs division once every 6–8 years.
Perfect for: natural-style shade gardens, forest edges, combined with hostas, astilbes and ferns.
