Description
Native to the high mountains of the Himalayas (2300–4800 m). Grows well in a sunny location in fertile, well-drained soil, and tolerates moisture better than many other bulbs. A beautiful and characteristic plant for both ornamental and commercial gardens. Height 30–90 cm. In August–September, hemispherical to broadly bell-shaped, purplish-pink to deep purple inflorescences open. The plant has a strong onion and garlic scent and flavor. In the Himalayas, it is known as Jimbu – dried leaves are used to season dishes in Nepal. Both the bulbs, leaves, and flowers are edible.
